Semester Exam

I wanted to make a coke can succulent vase because I knew it would be a challenge to made a rounded cylindrical object with an extruding logo.

It was very challenging to make a shape that would round the bottom edge of the can to make it seem like an actual can, and it took many class periods to perfect. I ended up using a ring shape that looked like a doughnut and legnthened it out far enough where I could get a rounded edge on the bottom. I then turned it into a cut out shape and line it up perfectly with the can. I also created a small pop top which will print on the side. Theres a hole in the top of the can which can fit a pop top.

And on the pop top, theres a rod that comes out of the top which will be able to fit into the hole, sense the hole is jut slightly bigger. In the images I put in my slide show of cura, you can see that theres some red under the coke logo, when designing the can, I ran out of time before I could find a way to be able to completely attatch the logo without having a 90 degree extruding part. What I could potentially do in the future is to try to find a way to round the actual coke logo, or take a shape out of to make the edge not 90 degrees.

I’m glad I used tinkercad for the coke can. It provided a good way to be able to create my can. The sketch tool allowed me to model the logo just by drawing it, and it was very easy to use. I also like that I can take shapes out of eveyrhting in order to create new shapes. I also got to take a nice shape out of the top in order to fill in the dirt, it sort of looked like an upsidedown ice cream cone. Additionally, I found perfect dimensions for the coke can in order for it to be accurate. My favorite part of this was desiging the logo, because it was a fun challenge getting as close to the actual design as possible. I enjoyed doing this project and hope to print it soon.

Choice Project

In my time while Mrs. Lebreque was out, I had Variety of choice projects. I guess the one that I spent the most time on would be the chicken nugget sauce clip, even if it did end up failing.

The best prototype

I had to find a base design to use, but when I printed it off I found out it didn’t work. I edited it three different time using three different prototypes in order to fix it but it never did work. The main problem was that whenever the heat was on, the sauce thing would melt and the weight of the sauce cup would force it to fall over.

Spilled mcdonalds 🙁

Everytime I tried to fix it, it stil failed. I added more and more support, but the sauce was always too strong. I learned that sometimes, it just isn’t meant to be, I also learned barbecue sauce is hard to get out of car seats. I finally learned that this project just wasn’t worth the amount of time that I put into it. Maybe in the future if I get really bored I could see myself trying to make a better prototype that wouldn’t melt, but honestly it’s probably just easier to hold my sauce.

Ornament post

I decided I was gonna create a hot dog as my ornament, because I thought it would be a challenging design to create, considering how round it is. I started by creating the bun, which I use a stretched out half circle. I also Filled in the walls so they can look thicker and fluffier, more like an actual bun. Then I added the hot dog. I had to fit the hot dog to be the exact same length as the bun so it looks normal, but that was easy because both were just 150 mm long. I used a corkscrew looking shape to make the sauce (which is supposed to be mustard and ketchup.) I lengthened it out and put it half way inside the hot dog so you can only see the upper edge of, giving the illusion that it is a swirly sauce. Then Finally I added the hook to make it able to hang on the tree. I decided to create my own design for the hook, because I didn’t want to salvage around for extra parts when that was already there for me. I printed it on the S3 printer in pink filament, because who doesn’t like pink? The project was quite fun and I’m glad I was able to do it in the Christmas season, and I’m looking forward to my next design project.

Introduction post

Hello, my name is Caden LaFayette, I will be using this blog as a way to share my progress in my science for inventors class. I am an 11th grader at MSHS and I’m also a freshman at NMU for radiography. I took SFI in order to improve my computer skills on a broader scale, so I spend a lot of my time tinkering around with the various coding applications and software on the computers. I particularly like this class because I have all of the tools of the makerspace at my disposal, and I like to be able to try things I wouldn’t be able to try otherwise. For example, I’ve never been able to try designing anything In VR before, and I found out that it’s actually pretty fun to do. I definitely wouldn’t have figured that out without this class.

Current work11/15

At the moment I would like to look at designing a mantis blade prototype based off of the video game CyberPunk2077. Other than that I just finished my other projects which was a phone stand and the giant octopus. Overall I’ve done quite a bit in my 3D printing unit and might be ready to start a different project or whole unit all together. I’m considering going to VR next so I can try out something different, but I still enjoy working with the 3D printers.

11/8

As my octopus print has finished, I plan on putting it in the sink to dissolve over night. In the meantime because theres nothing I can do but wait, I’ll print off a cool phone stand I found on thingiverse. It might be on the small side though. I also found a cool key chain with the DOOM logo on it. I was hoping to print that off because I only have one key chain and its a LaFayette Collision one

11/5

I spent a hefty chunk of the beginning of the class designing my web page. After that I had a wonderful design in the makers space when I figured out my octopus did not actually print, so I had to redo it. Then I worked on designing a sheet of chain mail on one of the other printers, which I see is now done.

11/2

Yesterday I tinkered a design for an aquarius ring, but when I printed it it was much bigger then I expected it to be. I also found a design for a flimsy octopus I liked, but it didnt turn out right. I finally printed a toyota symbol. All of the print got shifted to the right so none of it turned out good. I think it has something to do with the printer because this happened to andrew as well. I will try to work with that today

10/27

Yesterday I completely signed up for ultimaker, but something went wrong with the sign in and it didn’t work. I then worked with andrew and cullen to find a perfect design to print, and tinkered with one of andrews gas caps design for his subaru. I used my print that I made for the chicken nugget sauce and put it in my car. I found a major flaw with the design and figured out a major flaw with it. It warps in heat. I will continue to work on that today.
